ARGENTINE NATIVE FOREST:
THE MISIONES RAINFOREST

It is located in the province of Misiones and a small part of the northeast of the province of Corrientes.

The region is divided in two phytogeographic sections:

a The Planaltense sector

Is characterized by the Araucaria angustifolia (Parana pine) and the presence of yerba mate silvestre in the area of San Antonio, Bernardo de Irigoyen and San Pedro.

a The sector of Misiones

Is subdivided in six districts in the rest of the province:

  • Palo Rosa: a giant tree associated with the heart of palm located in the north;
  • Laureles: where these type of species predominate, mainly in the Paraná slope;
  • Tree Ferns: predominating in the Uruguay slope, similar to the previous formation but with understory of the old ferns;
  • Country: mountain pastures in the south of the region;
  • Urunday: outcropping basalts where only this pioneering species grows;
  • Fluvial: accompanying the watercourses that go along Misiones.

Among the typical tree species stand out:
  • lapachos (Tabebuia)
  • laureles (Laurus)
  • guatambu blanco
  • palo rosa (Aspidosperma polyneuron)
  • cedro misionero (Cedrella fissilis)
  • peteribí (Cordia trichotoma)
  • yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis)
  • marmelero (Ruprechtia laxiflora)
  • cañafístula (Cassia fistula)
  • timbó (Enterolobium contortisilicum)
  • guayubira, urunday (Astronium balansae)
  • cancharana (Cabralea oblongifoliola)
  • incense (Myrocarpus frondosus)
  • grapia (Apuleia leiocarpa)
  • maria preta (Diatenopteryx sorbifolia)
  • rabo ita (Lonchocarpus leucanthus)
  • rabo molle (Lonchocarpus muehlbergianus)
  • azota caballo (Luehea divaricada)
  • aguay (Poutería sauvis)
  • camboatá (Cupania vernalis)
  • carne de vaca
  • persiguero (Prunus brasiliensis)
  • parana pine (Araucaria angustifolia)
  • numerous myrtaceae
  • various bambous (Bambuseae)
  • tacuarembó (Rapanea ferruginea)
  • tacuaruzú (Guadua angustifolia)
  • palm trees such as the pindó (Syagrus romanzoffiana)
